A Winning Match Day Team
The pressure is on at football grounds around the country every match day. The focus may be on the footballers but the unsung heroes of the game are the team of stewards responsible for ensuring a safe stadium that adheres to the strict standards of the Government’s Sports Ground Safety Association (SGSA).
It’s crucial that all stewards at Premier League, Football League and Non-League clubs are trained to the highest level in spectator safety. Working in partnership with clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Derby County, Burton Albion and Grimsby Town, Mitre has to date supported hundreds of stewards around the UK achieve their L2, L3 or L4 NVQ in Spectator Safety. To ensure stewards benefit from a well-rounded set of skills, Mitre also offers certificates in customer service, team leadership and equality & diversity as part of tailored development programmes.
Through access to funding, Mitre is able to provide all these qualifications without cost to the clubs involved, helping them to operate within tough budgets. With this support, clubs are able to make sure match days run to plan with peace of mind that their stewards are fully equipped and trained to a standard that meets SGSA regulations as well as their own.
“We understand the pressure and scrutiny football clubs face and know only too well how hectic match days can be,” explains Jennie Bowmer, Managing Director at Mitre Group. “Our expert training team organises and delivers steward training and assessment to suit the club, whether that means linking sessions to fixtures or arranging standalone training days.
“We’re very proud of what our students have achieved and the success of the steward training programme. Our high success rate speaks for itself and we’re delighted to have the quality of our training recognised by awarding bodies that have granted us Direct Claims Status – meaning stewards have their qualifications recognised as soon as they have completed their training and met all the necessary criteria.”
CASE IN POINT: Grimsby Town FC
Over the past three years, Mitre and Grimsby Town Football Club have supported over 50 stewards achieve more than 100 accredited qualifications in topics ranging from customer service and spectator safety, to equality and diversity.
The successful steward training programme continues to go from strength to strength as new courses are added to the club’s education portfolio. Mitre has recently introduced further programmes to the club that will allow stewards to gain new skills in areas such as management and team leadership as well as build on core subjects including maths, English and ICT.
These programmes are designed to ensure stewards have the necessary skills to maintain a safe stadium for fans on match days, while also focusing on skills to support the stewards’ career development both within and outside the club.
Nick Dale, Grimsby Town FC Stadium Manager, comments: “We’re really proud of everything our stewards have achieved to date and the success of the training programme we’re able to offer. Working with the experienced team from Mitre we’ve built courses that reflect the needs of our stewards and local community. The trainers have taken the time to get to know the club inside out and build long-lasting relationships so we’re able to open up new opportunities for every member of the team.”
